Three layers sit between the bread, each one a long band waiting for its own colour. Stacking is the idea here: what goes on top of what, and in which order. A child who chooses the layers deliberately is doing something more interesting than colouring. The bread slices above and below are plain, which keeps the middle as the busy part.
